![]() ![]() The difficulty of FromSoftware’s pedigree is certainly here in Elden Ring. (The beta limits how deeply players can venture into Stormveil Castle, so expect a “To be continued…” message if you play the closed network test.) The hard route threw more than a dozen guards armed with crossbows at me - plus some vaguely lion-shaped beast that thrashed me when I got too close. The easy route had a horrible, multi-armed abomination at the end of it, but was otherwise populated by easily killed grunts. At the castle’s gates, a helpful (but suspicious) character told me that the castle had two routes: one very difficult, one very easy. (Curiously, I also encountered an invisible enemy, unsure whether it was a glitch or if FromSoftware was throwing something truly impossible at me.)Īnother section of the game, a “Legacy Dungeon” called Stormveil Castle, feels plucked from a Souls game and dropped into Elden Ring’s open world. Surely, there are plenty of other weird and dangerous things to encounter out there, having only scratched the surface. There were pockets of human guards outside a keep, groups of goblins minding their own business, and slimy creatures roaming a nearby beach. Elsewhere, I encountered a shallow lake filled with crabs - many large, a few of them gigantic, some hidden underground until I walked close to them. I tried to fight him twice before realizing that I was underpowered and underskilled to take him on. From the get-go, a mounted forest warrior in golden armor drove home the point that some threats should be avoided for now. In the slice of Elden Ring that I could explore, I saw some interesting things. But I wonder how much of the unlockable, interconnected worlds of Bloodborne and Dark Souls will be sacrificed for Elden Ring’s open-world ambitions. The developer has given players more plentiful and more generous options for traveling through its worlds over the years. That new level of convenience is not unheard of in a FromSoftware game. ![]() From anywhere.” Players even have the choice to revive themselves at other holy sites, called Stakes of Marika, if they encounter one. Sites of Grace are plentiful, and at one point during my time with the beta, I briefly groused about a long trip back to a different location only to realize “Oh right, I can just instantly teleport there from here. And, at least in the beta test slice of the game, my character could teleport from place to place from anywhere on the map. There are routes for traveling stealthily in the event that some major threat stands between you and your destination. Sites of Grace will offer visual guidance about where to go next. The Lands Between is easy to move through for other reasons. In fact, you’ll get a summonable horse, known as a Spirit Steed, to help you explore Elden Ring’s map quickly and (surprisingly) safely. In contrast to the mostly cordoned off areas of games like Dark Souls, the Lands Between are an expanse on par with the Hyrule of The Legend of Zelda : Breath of the Wild or The Elder Scrolls land of Skyrim. Stepping outside into the world of Elden Ring, a vast open plain called the Lands Between, is a different experience. In other words, veteran FromSoftware fans should feel right at home after learning the local dialect. ![]() The combat itself is nearly identical to that of FromSoft’s most recent fantasy action RPG, 2016’s Dark Souls 3. ![]() There are the requisite items to summon other players to your world, the colorful stones that one can leave behind as breadcrumbs, and a pair of flasks to refuel one’s health and magic points. Instead of harvesting Souls as the all-purpose currency, players collect Runes. Instead of finding relief at Dark Souls bonfires, players rest and recover at Sites of Grace. Longtime Dark Souls players will need little of this education beyond brushing up on new jargon. In the beta’s opening area, there’s a section called the Cave of Knowledge, a tutorial zone that teaches players the basics of Elden Ring. Playing through a few hours of the game’s upcoming network test - a beta version of the game that offers a walled-off slice of Elden Ring’s large open world - felt like slipping back into a game of Dark Souls 3, only bigger, wider, and with sundry new things to see, to collect, and to battle.īut it will assuredly feel familiar, especially if you’ve been playing the new breed of FromSoftware game pioneered by Demon’s Souls more than a decade ago. Elden Ring, the new game from Dark Souls and Bloodborne developer FromSoftware, feels like reconnecting with an old friend. ![]()

Microsoft is not a champion of open software but they’re making some great progress and I’m excited to see their support. PopOS comes with an optional feature called tile windows. I’m not sold on the idea of tiling windows and that’s OK. If you can’t get your primary apps working in Linux, then you should probably just stick with Windows or MacOS. If you’re planning to switch to Linux I recommend spending time playing around with your apps. Plus, you can also build your own MJML components. There are also MJML components for social media sharing, navigation bars, hero images, and much more. As you can see, MJML is a very straightforward and intuitive markup language. That includes tags for images, buttons, and tables. There are plenty of other useful components that come standard with MJML. Nicole said she uses the most often as that’s what’s obviously used to display email copy. The body of an email gets broken down into sections, which can contain one or more columns, which you can then fill with a variety of different components. There are a few basic types of “building blocks that you’ll use to code an email with MJML. Maybe that was because cats love the fact that MJML automatically targets Outlook to address the email client’s DPI scaling problems for you. At this point in the interview, Nicole’s cat got very excited. Nicole gave us a quick look at how the MJML gets parsed into HTML. The tag includes all the information you’d put in the head section of an HTML email. That’s an important thing to include when you’re coding accessible emails. That’s where she defines the language of the email using the lang attribute, which tells screen readers how to properly pronounce words in the language identified in the code. Nicole explained that the tag acts like the DOCTYPE. If you want to make one of your own, you can find some simple MJML code snippets and basic advice in our Email Coding 101 tutorial. Nicole got started by showing us her MJML email boilerplate. (Watch for part two on advanced MJML techniques coming soon.) Nicole had a lot to say about using MJML, so we’re releasing her episode in two parts. Besides being an experienced email developer, she’s also worked as a print production artist. Nicole is currently working for Fishawack Health in San Diego as a Direct Marketing Developer. And who wouldn’t want to develop emails in a faster, simpler way? So, let’s dive into Nicole Hickman’s tips on how to start using MJML. No one wants to be on the email team sending out campaigns that look horrible on mobile. I bet you’ve encountered a few of those in your own inbox. But a 2020 study from the CRM SuperOffice found that 1 out of 5 emails it examined were not optimized for mobile devices. ![]() You’d think that responsive design would be an absolute necessity for most email marketers by now. The result is that email developers are able to create emails faster with fewer lines of code. MJML’s open-source engine translates (or parses) the markup language into HTML. MJML is built on ReactJS and uses semantic syntax to help email developers code responsive designs more efficiently. And today, Mailjet by Sinch customers are using MJML to design their own responsive email templates. A team of developers from Mailjet created this markup language back in 2016 along with the help of others in the open-source community.īefore it was released to the public, Mailjet used it for a year as an internal engine to generate responsive email designs in the drag-and-drop email builder, Passport. MJML is among the most popular email frameworks out there. (Visit our Resource Center to view the full transcription of this episode) What is MJML? So, I was super excited for Nicole to tell me how she uses it and why it’s her preferred way to code an email.Ĭheck out our second episode of Notes from the Dev: Video Edition below and subscribe to Email on Acid’s YouTube channel so you’ll be sure to see future installments. But I’ve never had the chance to dive into it myself. I know a lot of email geeks who swear by it. I encountered MJML when I first started developing emails. In this episode of Notes from the Dev: Video Edition, Nicole Hickman joined me to walk us through some of the basics of MJML (Mailjet Markup Language). What if there was a faster way to write a lot less code and make campaigns responsive on every email client and device? That’s the promise of MJML, a markup language that was created to make the job faster and easier. A good developer writes clean, concise code that gets the job done. That includes coding responsive HTML emails. ![]() ![]() This mission's objective is to collect the Power Star in a cage as Vanish Luigi.
